Tate McRae denies having beef with Olivia Rodrigo: “We’re just friends who like to sing”

Tate McRae has hit back against allegations of a rift between her and Olivia Rodrigo.

Speaking to Us Weekly, the pop singer rebutted claims that the pair don’t get along, insisting they’re “just friends who like to sing”.

“We’re all supporting each other and want to go to each other’s concerts and want to listen to each other’s music,” she told the magazine.

“I love Olivia. I love all my girlfriends,” she continued, before suggesting that people “think way harder into things than we do.”

McRae previously made a cameo in Rodrigo’s music video for ‘bad idea right?’ alongside actresses Iris Apatow and Madison Hu. In an interview with SiriusXM last year she revealed Rodrigo texted her the day before filming to ask if she’d like to co-star in the video.

Speaking to the radio station, McRae said: “I know how stressful it is being in front of the camera as an artist. It’s scary because you’re like ‘Oh my god! Everyone’s staring at me’, so it was interesting to see Olivia in that position.”

“I adore her, I think she’s so talented and so beautiful,” she added. “All those girls are genuinely just the best girls ever.”

McRae is currently midway through her ‘Think Later Tour’ See below for a full list of remaining dates and get your tickets here.

Earlier this year, McRae spoke about her new, poppier creative direction, nothing that she was “bored” of writing sad songs prior to the release of her hit ‘Greedy’. “I was like, god, writing sad songs and being depressing, no one has ever seen a different side of me,” she told Variety.

“All they’ve seen is victim, depressed Tate. Sometimes you grow up and things change and I got bored of it. So I’m like, I want to switch this up, but it feels perfect because I think it’s fun to take a jab at yourself sometimes and your older self.”

The singer also responded to accusations that she was an industry plant. The performer, who got her start competitively dancing, said: “My true fans knew I danced, but it was finally for the first time like, is she an industry plant?

“I’m like, I’ve been grinding since 13 years old! I’m probably the furthest thing from an industry plant for how long I’ve been doing this.”

In December, McRae released her second album ‘Think Later‘, which NME said “contains enough intrigue to suggest that this is the work of an artist finally honing their identity, dancing and sparkling all the way,” in a four-star review.
